THE ROADMAP

Start Strong

Points: up to 4 | Est. Time: 5 mins. | Individual Action

Let's be friends! Take a minute to add us to your phone address book and follow us on social media. Think of this like prepping your weekly meals on Sunday—a little effort now means less to do later. To say thanks to your future self, we’ll give you points for each step:

1. Save our number in your phone as “motivote” (1 pt.)—This will make it easier to text us screenshots and photos for future actions. We are: (856) 347-2249‬.

  • Once you save us, send as a screenshot of us on your contact list. How meta.
  • Or, just text us something like “hey motivote, this is [your name]”

2. Follow us on social media (1 pt. for each follow)—Of course we like follows, but this also makes it easier for you to tag us in future actions. And when you tag us, you get BONUS POINTS.

Pencil It In

Points: 2 | Est. Time: 5 mins. | All-Team Action

*This is an All-Team Action, so all team members must confirm to get points.

“If it’s not on my calendar, it doesn’t happen.” We hear this a lot for exercising and errands (and say it ourselves!)—and it applies to voting too.

So here’s your next action: add Election Day to your calendar—that’s Tuesday, June 26—as an appointment or event on your personal or work calendar. (Even if you’re voting by mail, this will help you support your teammates). Did we mention Election Day is Tuesday, June 26?

You have two options:

1. Just create an event labeled “Election Day,” as you would for any other appointment, and send us a screenshot   or photo when you're done

OR

2. Use this League of Women Voter of New York's voter guide tool.

  • Enter your address and party
  • Click “Make a Plan to Vote” in the top right corner
  • Follow the prompts
  • Click “Add to Calendar”
  • Send us a screenshot or photo of it on your calendar, OR forward us the confirmation email that you get

How do I confirm?
After you take a screenshot or photo, share it by:

  • Emailing it to us here with an attachment
  • Texting it to (856) 347-2249‬ (If you haven’t yet, go ahead and save this as “motivote” in your phone—it will come in handy for future submissions.)

Snail Mail, If Needed

Points: 2| Est. Time: 2-15 mins. | Individual Action

Fun travel plans coming up? You can request a mail-in ballot if you won't be in NYC on Election Day (along with a few other reasons, like illness or disability.)

This requires printing out a form, and putting it in the mail—OR physically going to an office—and the deadline is approaching fast. So get moving!

In order to vote absentee, you need to print, complete and submit an application by mail. Then the absentee ballot is delivered to your address. And then you fill it out and mail it back.  (The alternative is to pick it up and/or drop off in person at your Local Election Office.)

The deadline for your absentee ballot request is Tuesday, June 19. Your request must actually arrive at the Local Election Office by this deadline—not just be postmarked.

Here’s one way to request your absentee ballot by mail:

Share on social media after you request it and you get 1 bonus point.

If you will be voting in person, help spread the news anyway: Click here to Tweet a reminder or here to post one on Facebook. Tag us, and we’ll say thanks with those 2 points.

Who's Your Rep?

Points: 2-4| Est. Time: 5 mins. | All-Team Action

*This is an All-Team Action, so all team members must confirm to get points.

Quick, what district do you live in? Who represents you in NY State Assembly? U.S. House of Representatives?

If that’s what your face looks like, you’re not alone. Just one-third of Americans can name their district’s elected member in the House. These are the people who make decisions that directly affect us each day. So for now, when you see the name of your representative or district, we simply want you to recognize it.  Baby steps.

Take two minutes to type in your address here and get the names of your district representatives: NYS Senate, NYS Assembly, US Congress and US Senate. Then send us a screenshot or photo of you on the website.

OVERACHIEVER BONUStype district numbers and names here. Writing this info out will make it stickier than just reading. You get 2 extra points.

See a Sample Ballot

Points: 2 | Est. Time: 5 mins. | All-Team Action

*This is an All-Team Action, so all team members must confirm to get points.

Okay, you know your current reps. (Still not sure? Check out Action 4.) Now let’s see who’s on the ballot.

We hear it all the time: “I’m not comfortable voting because I don’t know enough about the issues or candidates on the ballot.” We get it. Going into a voting booth blind is intimidating. So let's check out who's running and what they're about.

Here’s one option for looking up who's on your ballot (and if you prefer another resource, that’s fine too!):

Head to Ballotpedia’s Sample Ballot Lookup:

  • Enter your address and email address
  • Select the Primary Election option
  • Take a screenshot or photo of your sample ballot, to share with us
  • Check out the candidates and skim through the profiles
  • Want more? NYC voters: find more detailed profiles and priorities here.

How do I confirm?
After you take a screenshot or photo, share it using just one of these options:

  • Emailing it to us here with an attachment
  • Texting it to (856) 347-2249‬ (If you haven’t yet, go ahead and save this as “motivote” in your phone—it will come in handy for future submissions.)

Get Your Guide On

Points: 5| Est. Time: 5 mins. | Individual Action

Your next Action (should you choose to accept it) is to dive a little deeper into the NYC Voter Guide. The NYC Voter Guide is a super-handy resource for residents to get acquainted with the issues and candidates on the ballot. (Not an NYC resident? Hit us up and we'll get you what you need.)

If you live in one of the districts below, click on your district for your Voter Guide. Poke around a bit for candidate bios, accomplishments, and positions.

NY - 5 | NY- 9 | NY - 11 | NY - 12 | NY - 14 | NY - 16

District number slipped your mind? Check again here.

You probably know the drill by now: Send us a screenshot or photo of you checking out the guide. You only need to send one image. Don't worry about a separate image for each profile.

Are you NOT in one of the above districts? Click here instead

Plan Ahead

Points: 5| Est. Time: 10 mins. | All-Team Action

*This is an All-Team Action, so all team members must confirm to get points.

Did you know: People who make concrete plans are more likely to follow through with tasks. Research finds this true in everything from getting flu shots to eating more fruit—and it works for voting, too.
Making a voting plan—figuring out the when and where ahead of time—increases your likelihood of actually doing it. We've got you covered: Click here to fill out your voting plan. (No Primary this month? See below.)

    How do I confirm?
It's all taken care of! Once you submit, you get a copy of your plan and so do we.

    What if I'm voting absentee?!

    • Glad you asked! If for some reason you still haven't requested your absentee ballot (c'mon now!) you need to print it out, and drop it off at your Local Election Office TODAY. This is the last day you can request an absentee ballot.
    • You will still submit a voting plan to make sure you actually mail that absentee ballot in. (We don't want it getting lost in a pile of papers on your desk.)
    • Once you're ready to mail it, snap a selfie of you holding the completed ballot or putting it in the mail. (Be sure to cover any identifying info.) Then submit the photo along with the verification form

    Express Yourself

Points: 4-8| Est. Time: 10 mins. | Individual Action

You’ve been doing a lot of learning and planning. Now you have the opportunity to share your thoughts and, if you want, who you’re supporting and why.

For 4 points, share your thoughts on social media. Tag us (@motivoteus) and use the hashtag #MakeAmericaVoteAgain. You can share: why you’re voting, something you learned from your sample ballot, or what issue you find most important. (For those of you without Primaries in June, we still want to hear you!)

For our last Action (before Voting, of course!) we have two partner platforms we want you to test out. You can express your thoughts on a short video OR complete an actionable task.

OVERACHIEVER BONUS 1: For double points, create a brief video on MicGoat, a cool new platform where you can create videos to share your opinions on pressing issues. (You need to download the app—do that here.) Your video will only be shared with other motivote players, so it's a great forum for sharing ideas and sounding off. To confirm, send us a screenshot of the video and its topic.

OVERACHIEVER BONUS 2: For double points, use Magnify Progress to take action on an issue that's important to you. (You need to download the app—do that here.) The Magnify Progress team is curating tangible to-do's from Gun Safety and Immigration to Criminal Justice Reform and Voter Rights (not that we're biased). To confirm, send us the screenshot of the "celebration screen" after clicking Complete Action.
